Botanical Prints Displayed in a Kitchen

David Prince

I have a large (58" long x 25" deep) built-in desk in my kitchen. The kitchen has white cabinets (the desk is also white with a white Corian top). The style of the kitchen is cottage. The colors are yellow, red, and blue. The floor is wood. What can I put on the desk to decorate it? I have my computer in another room. Above the desk, there is an open shelf. I have some small items on the desk, but they look sort of lost.

Dear Diane,
Your desk space sounds like a wonderful opportunity to add organization and functionality to your kitchen. Start by asking yourself how you want to use this space. Do you need a place to write to-do lists, organize the household, pay bills, etc.? Do you want to consider moving your computer to the kitchen so that you are not running from one room to the other to accomplish tasks? Once you decide what function this desk space will serve, it will help you to choose accessories. There are many ways you could create a functional space on your desktop. For example, Pottery Barn (potterybarn.com) has the Aris Desk Hutch. This hutch is 48" wide and could sit right on top of your desk. It also offers lots of shelves for organizing mail, bills, magazines, paper, and other miscellaneous supplies, or for displaying a collection of pottery or other items. You could mix and match this Pottery Barn piece with fabricated and leather-covered storage containers and boxes from Hold Everything (holdeverything.com) for a splash of color. You may want to get a great lamp at a flea market or through a mail-order catalog. Photos, a vase of flowers, or a collection of pens or books would also be great additions. Consider using found items like a little vintage suitcase as a storage box for CDs or papers; old jars for pencils and tape; vintage planters, pots, and vases in colorful hues for fresh flowers, pencils, rulers, and other items. Repurposing vintage objects and furniture in homes is a great way to use a collection.

In addition to the desktop itself, think about using the wall and floor spaces. On the walls, you could use chalkboards, corkboards, or fabric-covered bulletin boards. Hold Everything has lots of different products for wall solutions. One in particular that I thought might be fun in your kitchen is its red leather magnetic board. From your description, the red leather would look great in your space, and the board would provide a functional place for notes, bills, and lists. To utilize the space under your desk, check out Ballard Designs (ballarddesigns.com). It has great-looking filing cabinets, in a number of finishes, that would fit under your desk, as well as a cabinet for your printer and fax machine, which can help you create a functional, contained workstation — without all the mess.

Good luck with your space!
Jennifer
